I’m Cassie Allen and I work at BBC Worldwide in the UK Licensing team. I was asked to join the swim at a client event last summer and promptly agreed – as I’m prone to do after a couple of glasses of champagne. I’ve had my doubts since, particularly as the actual distance round Malta looks to be about twice that mentioned at the time!
I’ve swum competitively in the past for a club and university but that was a long time ago and usually in the reassuring confines of an indoor pool. At the grand old age of 28, I’m not at all sure how I’m going to get on in open water and over such a long distance.
But I’m up for the challenge and I’m looking forward to visiting Malta for the first time. So far I’ve only got as far as thinking about early morning swim training but hopefully by the day I’ll have clocked up a few hundred metres. Since moving back to London 5 years ago I’ve tried to retain some semblance of fitness with gym work and running but the idea of mid-winter team training at Hampton outdoor pool hasn’t been particularly appealing.
Hopefully, the thought of sunshine (fingerscrossed) in Malta will make me a bit more dedicated over the coming months.
