In 1869, Henry J. Heinz launched his first product, ‘pure and superior’ grated horseradish, grown on a garden patch given to him by his parents and bottled in clear glass to showcase its purity, sparking demand and helping his range grow.
After arriving in Britain as a luxury offering, Fortnum & Mason stocked seven Heinz products in 1886. Heinz became an affordable household staple in the twentieth century, with popularity soaring and a Royal Warrant awarded as official recognition in 1954.
In 2019, Heinz marked 150 years of ‘clean plates’ with Fortnum & Mason paying homage through three limited-edition lines, an anniversary milestone that reinforces the brand’s enduring place in UK culture, as they have 100% brand awareness in the UK (YouGOV 24).
